Famous Failures Commissioned Paintings

Commissioned paintings are challenging. Not necessarily challenging in a negative way but rather in a positive way. The opportunity to create custom artwork for clients allows you to step out of your comfort zone. You end up painting new subjects, new styles, new color combinations, and the list goes on. The best part about it is that you get to work with wonderful people and involve them in your creative process. It’s a wonderful journey to be able to have someone give you their vision and you get to make that vision a reality.
I have created many works of art for clients over the years, but I have to say this commissioned project is one of my favorites. My client asked me to create five 4 x 4 inch watercolor paintings of Frida Kahlo, Oprah Winfrey, Abraham Lincoln, Michael Jordan, and J.K. Rowling with quotes. My client’s vision was for me to create the portraits of each in a loose style. I am use to creating fine detail so this was an exciting challenge.
Another challenge that I encountered along the way was painting the quotes. It was difficult at first since the letters I had to write were very small and stylized. I also did not have experience writing letters with a paint brush. I went out and bought a fine detail brush and practiced writing for hours. I ended up writing it in pencil and then painting over it.
During this journey, I learned how to paint tiny lettering, loosen my brush strokes, and most importantly I learned more about these amazing empowering people. What do these five people have in common? They have failed and they have succeeded despite those obstacles. Their failures are stepping stones to success. Overall I think they came out great. My client also loved them!
What do you think about commissioned paintings? Do you find them challenging? What do you like about them? 😀

Fresh Walls: Build a Gallery Wall

Gallery Wall Angy Paints 2

Gallery walls are such a great way to display your treasures. It is a neat and fun way to share the things that you are interested in and it will certainly communicate your personality to the observer. We have been seeing so many gorgeous wall galleries on hgtv, West Elm, and Lauren Conrad’s home. They gave us great inspiration for our dream wall gallery.

We were able to get great tips from Lauren Conrad’s recent article, Home Makeover: How to Build a Gallery Wall. “…Choose pieces that have a common thread—a certain color for example,” team LC writes. We chose pink! Plus a tad bit of gold here and there. We used gorgeous prints from  Jessica Illustration , CraftMei, and our AngyPaints originals. This tip certainly helped bring every art piece together. Another great tip: “the key is making sure you start with a couple of larger pieces to anchor the wall.” We took her advice and placed the largest frame first! We used our original watercolor painting, “Flamingo Love”. Then we worked around this piece adding smaller and medium sized frames to create a slanted diamond shape. We love the end result. What do you think?

We love all the great ideas and the how to build a gallery wall tutorials on the web! We are also excited to add super unique items that will personalize your wall space even more! Check out these gorgeous Etsy picks to create a fresh and one of a kind gallery wall.
